Despite early injury setbacks, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have had an exciting start to their IPL 2025 campaign. Their recent narrow win over Mumbai Indians (MI) was particularly impressive, given they were playing with a depleted bowling attack.

Even with the likes of Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma pushing MI’s chase deep, LSG bowlers held their nerve to defend a challenging total successfully.

Injury Challenges and New Additions

LSG’s bowling department has been hit hard by injuries, especially to key pacers such as Mohsin Khan, Avesh Khan, and Akash Deep. The lack of pace options forced the team to shuffle their lineup. One of the most impactful changes was the inclusion of Shardul Thakur, who quickly made his mark. His economical 19th over against MI—conceding only 7 runs when 29 were needed off 12 balls—played a pivotal role in sealing the win.

Avesh Khan and Akash Deep have also made their comebacks, gradually reinforcing the bowling unit. Akash returned from a back injury and impressed in his first game back with a solid spell, taking 1 for 46. Avesh, although slightly expensive in his outings so far, has added crucial depth to the squad.

Mayank Yadav’s Imminent Return Could Be a Game-Changer

Now, LSG fans have more reason to celebrate. Speed sensation Mayank Yadav is set for an early return. The young pacer lit up IPL 2024 with his raw pace, regularly clocking over 150 km/h. His fastest delivery of 156.7 km/h was the quickest of the entire season, making him one of the most exciting prospects in Indian cricket.

Mayank has been out of action due to a back issue and toe injury, but his recovery is progressing well. LSG head coach Justin Langer provided a positive update, stating that Mayank is “up and running” and bowling at around 90–95% of his full intensity at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

Coach and Team Management Confident

Speaking about Mayank in a recent press conference, Langer said:

“He’s working very hard at the NCA. I saw a video of him bowling yesterday—he was up to about 90–95%. That’s a great sign not just for LSG, but for Indian cricket overall. I don’t think there’s been a faster bowler in India than Mayank Yadav.”

Langer also praised the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for their role in rehabilitating fast bowlers like Avesh Khan and Akash Deep, and now, potentially, Mayank Yadav.

“The NCA has done a fantastic job. They got Avesh and Akash back on the field, and now they’re working hard with Mayank. We’re hopeful he’ll be ready soon.”

What Mayank’s Return Means for LSG

Mayank’s return could significantly strengthen LSG’s bowling arsenal as the tournament heats up. His raw pace and ability to intimidate batters add a crucial dimension to their attack. If he returns in full form, he could be the X-factor LSG needs to push deeper into the playoffs.

As fans eagerly await his comeback, LSG will look to build on their strong start and maintain their momentum in IPL 2025.
