Always Been Selfless – Not Rohit Sharma, But Another IPL Captain Praised for His Attitude
Rising batting star Suryansh Shedge has showered praise on Punjab Kings and Mumbai captain Shreyas Iyer, calling him a “selfless player” whose attitude has been key to his success.
Currently in top form, Shreyas Iyer led Kolkata Knight Riders to victory in IPL 2024, captained Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024, and played a crucial role in India’s Champions Trophy 2025 win, amassing 243 runs in five matches.
Shedge and Iyer’s Journey from Mumbai to Punjab
Having been a vital part of Mumbai’s SMAT 2024 title win under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy, Shedge has now reunited with him at Punjab Kings after being bought for his base price of INR 30 lakh in the IPL 2025 auction.
“Now that I know him personally, I can say he’s an amazing person. Even off the field, we talk a lot about cricket, and you can see his passion for the game,” Shedge said in an interview with the Times of India.
He’s Always Been Selfless – Shedge on Iyer’s Leadership
Shedge, who had an outstanding debut senior season, scoring 131 runs at a strike rate of 251 in Mumbai’s SMAT 2024 triumph, hailed Iyer’s selfless nature and team-first attitude.
“I remember a Vijay Hazare match against Hyderabad where we were chasing a low total. He usually bats at No.4 or No.5, but he sent us youngsters up the order and batted at No.8. He’s always been selfless, and that’s why he’s so successful. That attitude is contagious,” Shedge added.
“I think our bond is built on this shared belief—the team comes first, individual success later.”
Shreyas Iyer’s Selfless Knock in PBKS vs GT IPL 2025 Match
Iyer was recently praised for his unbeaten 97 against Gujarat Titans in Punjab Kings’ opening match of IPL 2025. Despite being close to a century, the 30-year-old selflessly allowed Shashank Singh to keep the strike, helping him score an unbeaten 44 off 16 balls.
When asked if Iyer played a role in Punjab Kings signing him at the IPL 2025 auction, Shedge replied:
“I didn’t receive a call from him before the auction. But he is someone I always look up to. I played two white-ball tournaments (SMAT and Vijay Hazare Trophy) under his captaincy, and we won the SMAT 2024 title. The camaraderie we share in the dressing room is all because of his leadership.”
