The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for March 22, the opening day of IPL 2025, predicting heavy rain and thunderstorms across South Bengal. Additionally, a Yellow Alert has been issued for March 23, further increasing concerns.
According to AccuWeather, there is a 74% chance of rain in Kolkata on Saturday, with 97% cloud cover throughout the day. By evening, the probability of rainfall rises to 90%, making it highly uncertain whether enough overs will be bowled to determine a match result.
Star-Studded Opening Ceremony in Jeopardy
The grand IPL 2025 opening ceremony, featuring performances by Bollywood actress Disha Patani and singer Shreya Ghoshal, is also at risk due to the expected downpour. Fans may have to wait and see if the event proceeds as planned or gets disrupted.
KKR vs LSG Match Moved to Guwahati
Apart from weather concerns, another IPL 2025 fixture has already been rescheduled. The match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), originally set for April 6 at Eden Gardens, will now be held in Guwahati. The decision was made after West Bengal police expressed its inability to provide security due to the Ram Navami celebrations on the same day.
The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Snehasish Ganguly confirmed this development, stating that rescheduling within Kolkata was not feasible. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari also revealed that over 20,000 processions are planned across the state for the festival, making security arrangements difficult.
