MS Dhoni Opens Up on Playing IPL at 43: ‘I Have to Stay Relevant’
Ever since retiring from international cricket in 2020, MS Dhoni has continued to be a key figure in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The former Indian captain, now 43, remains an integral part of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), even after handing over the leadership role to Ruturaj Gaikwad in IPL 2024.
MS Dhoni’s Take on Playing at 43

Competing at the highest level at 43 is no easy feat, but for Dhoni, it’s all about adapting to the evolving nature of T20 cricket. Addressing the ever-present speculation about his IPL future, Dhoni shared his perspective on staying relevant in the modern game.
“Cricket has evolved significantly over the years. The way we played T20 in 2008 is vastly different from how we approach it now. Today’s batsmen are more aggressive, willing to take risks with shots like reverse scoops and unorthodox sweeps,” Dhoni said in an interview with JioStar after CSK’s win over Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025.
“I am no different. I have to adapt as well. That’s what is required of me at this stage of my career. Staying relevant is the key,” he added.
Dhoni’s Role in CSK’s Decision-Making

There has been widespread speculation that despite stepping down as CSK captain, Dhoni remains the strategic mastermind behind the team. However, Dhoni has dismissed such claims, stating that while he shares insights with Ruturaj Gaikwad, the young captain makes the final decisions.
“Ruturaj has been part of CSK for a long time. He is calm, composed, and has a great temperament—qualities that made him a strong choice for captaincy. Before the season began, I told him, ‘If I offer advice, you don’t have to follow it. I will try to stay away as much as possible,’” Dhoni explained.
“During the season, there was speculation that I was making decisions in the background. But the fact is, Ruturaj was making 99% of the calls, including bowling changes and field placements. My role was only to provide support when needed. He has done a brilliant job leading the team.”
Dhoni on His Bond with Virat Kohli

MS Dhoni also opened up about his bond with Virat Kohli, recalling how their relationship evolved from that of a captain and a young player to a friendship built on mutual respect.
“Initially, it was more of a mentor-student relationship. Over time, as we interacted more, we became friends. Even today, we share that bond, but there is always a line of respect between a senior and a junior player,” Dhoni said.
He also revealed that Kohli often sought his advice after getting out in crucial moments. “Virat would analyze his dismissals with me—whether he could have delayed taking a risk or handled the situation differently. We had many discussions, which helped both of us grow as cricketers.”
Looking Ahead
As IPL 2025 progresses, fans continue to marvel at Dhoni’s fitness, adaptability, and strategic brilliance. Whether he continues beyond this season remains a question, but one thing is certain—his influence on CSK and Indian cricket remains unparalleled.
