Eden Gardens Curator Changes Stance After Controversy Over KKR Captain Ajinkya Rahane’s Pitch Request
The Eden Gardens pitch controversy has taken a new turn. Sujan Mukherjee, the curator of the iconic stadium, initially denied making any changes to the surface despite Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Ajinkya Rahane’s request for a spin-friendly track. However, after facing backlash, he has now clarified his stance, stating he never refused any request from KKR.
The Controversy: Rahane’s Frustration Over Eden Pitch

KKR’s season opener in IPL 2025 saw them suffer a heavy defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). After the loss, Rahane expressed disappointment over the pitch conditions and hoped for more assistance for spinners in future games.
“We would love to see the pitch helping spinners, but since it was under covers for nearly two days, conditions weren’t ideal. That said, we have quality spinners who can perform on any surface, and I’m sure they are confident,” Rahane had stated.
Mukherjee’s Initial Statement: No Changes to the Pitch

Speaking to RevSportz, Mukherjee dismissed any suggestion of altering the pitch to favor KKR’s spinners.
“According to IPL rules, franchises have no say over pitch preparation. The surfaces here have always been like this, and nothing will change,” he had said.
He even pointed to RCB spinners’ success, saying, “Their spinners took four wickets. What did KKR’s spinners do? Krunal Pandya got three wickets, and Suyash Sharma turned one sharply to dismiss Andre Russell.”
The U-Turn: Mukherjee Now Says He Never Denied KKR’s Request
Amid mounting criticism, Mukherjee changed his stance, claiming he was misinterpreted. Speaking to Sports Tak, he stated:
“No official or player from KKR specifically requested a pitch type for the first match. A coach asked me about the pitch behavior during practice, and I simply said, ‘It will turn and be good for batting.’”
He also emphasized his longstanding positive relationship with KKR and assured that the pitch was prepared according to BCCI guidelines.
“I never refused anything to KKR. We have had a good relationship for a long time, and I prepared the pitch as per BCCI standards. Those accusing me don’t know the reality,” he asserted.
Simon Doull’s Criticism: Move KKR Away If They Don’t Get Their Preferred Pitch

Former New Zealand pacer Simon Doull weighed in on the matter, criticizing Mukherjee’s reluctance to cater to KKR’s needs. He suggested that if the franchise isn’t getting the pitch conditions they prefer, they should consider shifting their base.
“If the curator is ignoring the home team’s request—despite them paying stadium fees and hosting IPL matches—then they should consider moving elsewhere,” Doull told Cricbuzz.
He also added, “His job is to prepare pitches, not to give opinions on the game. That’s not what he’s paid for.”
KKR Bounces Back After Eden Gardens Loss

Despite the pitch debate, KKR rebounded strongly in their second match, securing a victory against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati, proving their resilience as the tournament progresses.
