Updated: May 1, 2025 | By Rishav Narang
In a nail-biting contest at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Punjab Kings clinched a dramatic 4-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings, effectively ending CSK’s IPL 2025 campaign. Chasing a target of 191, PBKS got over the line in the final over, moving up to second place on the points table with 13 points, while CSK became the first team to be officially eliminated from the tournament.
Final Score:
- CSK: 190/10 (19.2 overs)
- PBKS: 194/6 (19.4 overs)
CSK’s Playoff Hopes Shattered

With only two wins from 10 matches, Chennai Super Kings’ journey this season has been dismal. This marks the first time in their history that the franchise has failed to reach the playoffs for two consecutive seasons. Despite putting up a competitive total, their bowlers couldn’t defend it on home turf.
Skipper MS Dhoni admitted post-match, “We were probably 10-15 runs short. Losing four wickets in the 19th over was the turning point. We didn’t play out the full 20 overs, and in tight games, every ball matters.”
Punjab Kings Chase Down the Target with Grit

Punjab’s chase was anchored by a brilliant 72-run knock from captain Shreyas Iyer, who was later named Player of the Match. After an early 44-run partnership between openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh, Iyer took control of the innings, countering spin and maintaining momentum.
Though there were hiccups near the end—including a quick double strike in the 19th over—Marco Jansen sealed the win with a streaky boundary, bringing an end to a tense finish.
“I love chasing big totals,” said Iyer. “The heat made fielding draining, but chats with Ricky [Ponting] helped us stay focused and finish early. We didn’t want to take it deep because CSK has great death bowlers.”
Chahal’s Hat-Trick Shocks CSK
Earlier, CSK’s innings was led by a gritty 88 from Sam Curran, with strong support from Dewald Brevis (78-run stand) and Shivam Dube. Just when CSK looked set for a 200+ total, Yuzvendra Chahal flipped the script with a stunning hat-trick in the 19th over, finishing with four wickets in that spell and restricting CSK to 190.
Punjab’s Playoff Dreams Alive
Prabhsimran Singh, who also made a vital contribution at the top, credited coach Ricky Ponting for maintaining a positive dressing room. “We’ve had great vibes since the camp. We’ve bonded well as openers, and our goal now is to bring home the trophy.”
What’s Next?
With this win, PBKS are now strong contenders for a top-two finish, while CSK are left to play for pride in their remaining fixtures. The Yellow Army’s hopes for a turnaround this season have ended in heartbreak, and questions will now shift to what the future holds for icons like MS Dhoni.
