Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) regular captain, Sanju Samson, has played the first three matches of IPL 2025 solely as a batter. The wicketkeeper-batsman suffered a right index finger injury during the fifth T20I against England earlier this year, preventing him from keeping wickets. In his absence, Riyan Parag has taken charge as RR’s interim captain.

Samson had initially received partial clearance to participate in IPL 2025 only as a batter. However, before resuming wicket-keeping duties, he must be assessed by the Sports Science department at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE).

Sanju Samson’s Fitness Update – Clearance from BCCI’s CoE

According to a Cricbuzz report, Sanju Samson visited the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) on March 31 to seek medical clearance for wicket-keeping duties.

Will Samson Reclaim His Role as Captain?

Samson is expected to return as RR’s skipper only if he receives medical clearance to keep wickets. Cricbuzz sources suggest that he has fully recovered from his injury and is likely to resume wicket-keeping and captaincy in RR’s next match, scheduled a week from now.

“He will seek clearance for the remaining games and is expected to take over as captain from RR’s next match,” a source stated.

Samson’s Recent Batting Form in IPL 2025

While Sanju Samson started IPL 2025 on a high, his form has dipped slightly in the last two games:

  • 66 off 37 balls (Strike Rate: 178.37) vs Sunrisers Hyderabad
  • 20 off 16 balls vs Chennai Super Kings
  • 13 off 11 balls vs Kolkata Knight Riders

Upcoming Fixture – Rajasthan Royals vs Punjab Kings

Rajasthan Royals have won just one out of their three matches so far. Their next game is against Punjab Kings in Mullanpur on April 5.
